The British Admiralty admitted the vulnerability to air attack of the Home Fleet in Scapa Flow and ordered the fleet to sea during the next moonlight period.  German submarines U-57, U-19, U-21 and U-22 began moving into position to attack.

U-38 sank the Danish MV Argentina east of the Shetland Islands, Scotland, en route to South America.

British miners voted to forgo part of their holiday allowance to help the war effort.

Dr. Fritz Todt was appointed Reichsminister for armament and munitions.

The escorted US convoy, now empty, left Hanoi to sail to the east coast of the USA via the Philippines and Hawaii.
