Eighty years on. 3rd March 1940

The Luftwaffe bombed Southampton when the liner Queen Elizabeth was due to arrive.  In fact she was headed west to USA.

In Finland the Soviet troops continued their attack across the frozen Viipuri Bay.  Another island, Uuras, was captured.  

The cruiser HMS York stopped the German SS Arucas south of Iceland. The crew scuttled her.

U-29 laid mines in the Bristol Channel.  The British SS Cato hit one and sank.

Five people died when a bomb exploded in the Stockholm offices of the communist newspaper Norrskensflamman.

U.S envoy Sumner Welles met Hermann Göring.  Like Hitler, Göring blamed the war on Britain and France.  Welles found Göring to be as cold and ruthless as the other Nazi leaders but thought he was at least capable of taking a broader view of international relations.

Italy sent a note to Britain protesting the British blockade of German coal shipments to Italy.

The British public had invested £100,000,000 in National Savings since September 1939.

Game day 185. USSR

The Soviet Union received 29 Industrial Resource Points.  An industrial centre was set up in Karelia.  Six infantry battalions departed Moscow for Leningrad.
