1943 Rations for Lent 2023. Week 2 day 3

Tuesday February 28th 2023

I started the day with the first slice of home made “National Loaf” accompanied by blackberry marmalade. A bit solid as bread goes, but pleasant enough.

For lunch I used another £1 from my meat ration with a steak and kidney pie and steamed leek and cabbage. The pie was microwaveable but I put it in the second steamer compartment, which worked. Unfortunately I let the steamer boil dry, so a great deal of scrubbing was needed to clean it before the Memsahib came home.

For our dinner I prepared two enormous jacket potatoes, first smearing them with lard and salt to make the skins more crispy. We opened a tin of baked beans (2 points, so 1 from my ration) as a topping.

Later in the evening I was still peckish – after two good meals – so I treated myself to a handful of roasted cob nuts and a rye cracker with Marmite.

I managed to get some “off-ration” black market meat today. Mallard breast, wood pigeon and a squirrel.
