A German aircraft with an officer on board carrying plans for Fall Gelb, the German invasion of the Low Countries, crash-landed in neutral Belgium. The plans fell into the hands of Belgian intelligence.

Adolf Hitler set 17th January 1940 as the date to launch his attack in the west.

France launched a flotilla of merchant ships at Marseilles.
