The Irish government introduced emergency powers to incarcerate members of the Irish Republican Army without trial.

Soviet submarine S-2 hit a Swedish naval mine in the Sea of Åland and sank with the loss of all 50 crew.  Russian forces launched a counter-attack in Karelia.

Adolf Hitler’s traditional New Year’s reception of the diplomatic corps in the Reich Chancellery was cancelled due to the war.  In Prague journalists and ex-Czech Army officers were rounded up by the Nazis.

In Britain the blackout was said to have made people aware of the benefits of Vitamin A for good eyesight.

Game day 114. Japan

Japanese infantry moved to the north of Peking and attacked the city, supported by a squadron of fighters.  The Chinese defenders were eliminated and the Japanese retook the city.

The convoy shipping more infantry to Shanghai arrived off the coast of Kwangtung.  Six squadrons of fighters flying from Japan attacked the Chinese infantry approaching Shanghai from the north-west.  Two Chinese battalions were destroyed.
