Eighty years on. 23rd December 1939

Historical

Several South American countries raised a protest against Germany and Britain relating to the Battle of the River Plate, which was a breach of the Pan-American Security Zone.

The Irish Republican Army (IRA) stole over one million rounds of ammunition from the magazine in Phoenix Park, Dublin.  A massive security operation was put in place by British and Irish authorities.

The Finnish army trapped and cut to pieces the Russian 44th Motorised Division on the road to Suomissalmi.  A Russian assault on the fortifications around Taipale was repulsed with many casualties.

Game day 114. USSR

France and Finland taking no active move, the turn passed to the Russians, who launched a combined arms assault on Helsinki.  The Finns were wiped out, for the loss of one Russian Infantry battalion.  The Russians moved into Helsinki and with no further opposition in the country, claimed Finland.  This was the first major deviation from the historical timeline of the War.

History overturned.

History will try to re-assert itself, but may struggle with this outcome. The Germans will be deprived of their Finnish allies and need to worry about Soviet troops on their northern flank. We shall see.
