Able, Baker and Charlie Companies, comprising 1st Battalion 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, were tasked with destroying a battery of Flak guns near the railway crossing in map square 1013.
Baker Company took point and moved towards the east edge of the city.
By 15:00 Baker Company had entered the outskirts, moving cautiously through the gardens.
By 15:25 Baker Company had penetrated the city and occupied a large warehouse near the railway line, overlooking the Flak site.
They called up artillery support from the 75mm howitzer battery to the south east, but no damage was done.
As the Germans were recovering from the artillery shelling the Paras subjected them to a hail of small arms fire. The gunners fled and the paras took the position.
Mission accomplished, the Battalion regrouped and moved back to the east to prepare for the expected enemy counter-attack.
